Haematological Diseases - Blood Disorders
In addition to haematological malignancies, such as leukaemias and lymphomas, children and adolescents can suffer blood disorders that are not classified as cancer, but may lead to severe diseases and therefore require treatment. Blood diseases, some of which are hereditary, can be due to morphological alterations or disorders of the blood cells (i.e. red or white blood cells, platelets) or are caused by some kind of immune deficiency or blood coagulation disorder. Non-malignant blood disorders include severe aplastic anaemia (SAA), sickle-cell disease, thalassaemia, haemophilia, iron deficiency anaemia, and various other types diseases.
