Leukaemias
Malignant diseases of the bone marrowAccounting for 34% of all childhood cancers and showing an incidence of about 600 newly diagnosed young patients in Germany per year, leukaemias are the most frequent malignancies in German children and teenagers. Leukaemias originate in the bone marrow, where the blood is produced. Typical for leukaemias is unlimited proliferation of immature (dysfunctional) white blood cells. There are lymphoblastic and myeloid leukaemias, the courses of which can be either acute or chronic. In childhood and adolescence, most (about 95% of) leukaemias are acute. This means that they are usually progressing fast.
